Booking choice: The General Viewing ticket, from $24 per person. Check dates Tour details
Phillip Island Nature Parks sells eight Penguin Parade experiences in 2026, from a A$34 seat on the main grandstand to a A$129 walk to a secluded beach. Most visitors need the cheapest one. The pricier tickets buy distance, or rather the lack of it, plus a ranger and fewer people around you.
Prices below are the official adult rates on the Penguin Parade ticket page, checked in October 2026, next to what GetYourGuide charges in US dollars. The biggest catch is not the price. Official tickets are non-refundable, even when the weather turns.
The quick answer
Yes, you need a ticket, and every person needs one, babies included. General Viewing costs A$34 for adults, A$17 for children aged 4 to 15 and A$85 for a family of four; under-4s are free but still need a ticket. Penguins Plus (A$93) and Underground Viewing (A$103) put you closer. Book ahead for December, January, school holidays and long weekends.

Do you need tickets for the Penguin Parade?
Yes. Everyone needs a ticket, including infants, and Nature Parks says bookings are essential.
Children under 4 pay nothing but still need a ticket in their name: the booking terms (clause 3.7) say they "need a Ticket to enter but pay no fee". Add them when you book.
You don't need to print anything. Show the e-ticket on your phone to the gate rangers at the back of the visitor centre, as the official FAQ explains. Every day tour from Melbourne includes a ticket in its price, so if you are on a tour you have nothing to buy.
How much does a Penguin Parade ticket cost in 2026?
General Viewing is A$34 for adults and A$17 for children. Penguins Plus is A$93, Underground Viewing A$103, and the ranger-led options run from A$85 to A$129.
Children are aged 4 to 15; adults are 16 and up. A family ticket covers two adults and two children. Pensioners with an Australian Pensioner Concession, Seniors, DVA or Victorian Carer card pay A$23.80 for General Viewing, and there is no student rate.
| Ticket | Adult | Child 4-15 | Family | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Viewing | A$34 | A$17 | A$85 | Tiered grandstand over Summerlands Beach |
| Family Wildlife Tour | A$87.50 | A$43.75 | A$218.75 | Wildlife talk, then reserved General Viewing seats (Fri, Sat, school holidays) |
| Penguins Premium | A$85 | No under-12s | n/a | Guide's presentation, boardwalk into the colony, small beachfront stand |
| Penguins Plus | A$93 | A$46.50 | A$232.50 | A separate, closer grandstand |
| Underground Viewing | A$103 | A$51.50 | A$257.50 | Window at penguin eye level, below the path |
| Guided Penguin Tour | A$108 | Ages 12+ | n/a | Ranger guide through the colony, personal headset |
| Ultimate Adventure Tour | A$129 | Ages 16+ | n/a | Eco tour to a secluded beach away from the crowds |
Two odd details. Premium (A$85) costs less than Penguins Plus (A$93) on the official page this year. And a cached older price list still floats around the web with General Viewing at A$32 and Penguins Plus at A$80; the figures above are current.
Which is better: General Viewing, Penguins Plus or Underground?
General Viewing is fine for most people. Pay for Penguins Plus if you want to be close without a guide, and Underground if you want penguins at eye level.
On the main stands you watch small birds come out of the surf at a distance, in failing light. Binoculars help. The real close-up comes afterwards: the penguins walk to their burrows beside the boardwalks, often a short step away, and everyone sees that part whatever they paid.
Penguins Plus is a separate stand that Nature Parks describes as "up close and personal". Underground Viewing puts you behind glass in a bunker, where "some might even come up to the glass", as the experience page puts it. It suits kids and short people best. Our pick for a first visit on a budget: General Viewing, arriving early for a seat near the front.

Check dates for the General Viewing ticketWhat do Penguins Premium and the guided tours add?
A ranger, a smaller group and a spot away from the main crowd. Premium and the Guided Penguin Tour are for ages 12 and up; the Ultimate Adventure Tour is 16 and up.
- Penguins Premium (A$85): a guide's presentation, then a secluded boardwalk into the colony and a limited-capacity stand on the beachfront.
- Guided Penguin Tour (A$108): a ranger leads you through the colony with a personal headset for the commentary. It leaves at the time printed on your ticket and involves stairs.
- Ultimate Adventure Tour (A$129): a walk to a secluded beach away from the parade, with soft sand, 20 stairs and up to 1.5 km each way on uneven ground. Closed shoes are mandatory. If penguin numbers are low or the tide is high, it becomes a Guided Penguin Tour.
- Family Wildlife Tour (A$87.50 adult, A$43.75 child): a talk about the wildlife of Milawul (Phillip Island), then reserved seats in the General Viewing area. Fridays, Saturdays and nightly in school holidays.
The reserved seats are the hidden value of the family tour. In December and January plain General Viewing seats are not guaranteed.
Does the Penguin Parade sell out?
Yes. Between December 2024 and February 2025 it sold out on 47 nights, a record, and General Viewing seats are not guaranteed in December and January.
The figure comes from the Victorian Government, which also counts more than 700,000 visitors a year. Nature Parks names the busy times plainly: mid-December to late January, long weekends, school holidays, Easter and Chinese New Year. On those dates book as soon as your plans are fixed, and allow extra time for the traffic onto the island.
A sold-out night also means a full grandstand. If you arrive late in high summer you may stand. The summer 2026-27 update lists the school holiday dates to watch.

Can you buy Penguin Parade tickets on the day?
Sometimes. If seats are left you can pay the full price at the visitor centre, but summer nights and holidays can sell out, so don't count on it.
The terms (clause 6.2) say visitors without pre-purchased tickets pay the full entry fee, which means the counter still sells tickets when there is room. Nature Parks recommends booking ahead all year and says it is essential in peak periods.
Two practical points. The site is cashless: ticketing, the shop and the cafés take contactless payment only. And Penguins Plus, Underground Viewing and the ranger-guided tours always need a booking, according to the FAQ. On a quiet winter weekday, walking up works. On a January Saturday it is a gamble with a two-hour drive attached.
Are Penguin Parade tickets refundable?
Official tickets are not: they are non-refundable and non-changeable, and bad weather or low penguin numbers don't count. The GetYourGuide ticket cancels free up to 2 days before.
Clause 3.3 of the official terms is blunt: tickets are "non-refundable, non-changeable, non-transferable". The parade runs in rain and wind. Nature Parks can cancel a night for extreme heat, high winds or heavy rain, generally without a refund, subject to Australian Consumer Law. Upgrading is allowed, with what you paid credited against the new ticket.
Resellers differ. The General Viewing ticket on GetYourGuide is sold by Phillip Island Nature Parks itself and refunds in full up to 2 days before, for about US$24. That costs a little more than A$34 at the gate. The difference buys flexibility, and for a trip planned weeks ahead we think it's worth it.

Explore the General Viewing ticket Tour detailsHow do you buy tickets, and is the 3 Parks Pass worth it?
Buy online from Nature Parks, through a reseller with free cancellation, or as part of a tour. The 3 Parks Pass adds the Koala Reserve and Churchill Island and pays off if you visit either.
Bought separately, General Viewing (A$34), the Koala Conservation Reserve (A$17.50) and Churchill Island Heritage Farm (A$17.50) come to A$69 per adult. The 3 Parks Pass bundles all three at a discount: you book a date for the parade, then visit the other two once each within six months. Versions with Penguins Plus or Underground exist too.
On GetYourGuide the 3 Parks Pass starts at about US$41 with free cancellation up to 2 days before. If you are driving yourself, it is the best-value ticket here. If you have no car, a tour is the only realistic way in: see the tours from Melbourne.

The parade on your date, then the koalas and the heritage farm whenever suits within 6 months. Free cancellation up to 2 days before.

Do children need a ticket for the Penguin Parade?
Yes. Children aged 4 to 15 pay the child rate (A$17 for General Viewing) and under-4s are free, but every child needs a ticket of their own. Premium and the Guided Penguin Tour take ages 12 and up only.
Is there a discount for pensioners or students?
Pensioners and holders of Seniors, DVA and Victorian Carer cards pay A$23.80 for General Viewing with ID. There is no student or health care card rate. Companion Card holders get one free admission, booked by phone or in person.
Do I need to print my Penguin Parade ticket?
No. Show the e-ticket on your phone to the gate rangers at the back of the visitor centre. If it has no barcode, give the ticket desk the surname on the booking.
Is the Penguin Parade worth the money?
For most people, yes. A$34 buys a seat on a cold grandstand and then a slow walk back beside hundreds of penguins heading for their burrows. Set your expectations: no photos, distance on the beach, and a long drive.
